According to noted business authority Ann Monteith, the very nature of the photography business has changed radically in the past few years because of the growth of the boutique studio model. “Some of the most successful businesses I see, whether run by women or men, are boutique studios that are tightly focused on specific market niches,” she says. “What sets these studios apart is their understanding that women are the primary consumers of portrait and wedding photography, and that marketing to them effectively and satisfying their photographic needs requires a new way of thinking and operating.”
In this fast-paced program, Ann will explore the characteristics that make boutique studios successful:
- Creating a focused business concept with a clear brand message
- Knowing the studio’s ideal client and how to reach her
- Embracing powerful marketing and strategies and effective marketing products
- Developing photographic products that excite the targeted market
- Creating strategies for building repeat and referral business
You also will learn how to create a boutique studio business from the ground up through Ann’s presentation of the step-by-step process by which she created the financial and marketing plan for her new boutique studio, Persnickety Pet Portraits.
“The most exciting aspect of boutique studios,” Ann concludes, “is they are much easier to manage than traditional studios, and they are a whole lot of fun!”
What you’ll learn:
- What boutique studios are all about, and whether this would be an appropriate business model for you to consider.
- How to brand and promote a boutique studio.
- How to create a business plan for a boutique studio.

Earn up to $1000 per hour with School Photography!
Did you know that underclass school photographers (Grades K-11) earn some of the best money in the photo industry? If you’ve ever thought about diversifying your studio business to bring in BIG money during the Fall and Spring seasons – working weekdays before 3PM – and with no weekend work – this is the workshop for you! This comprehensive 5 day program presents everything you need to know to operate a successful undergraduate school portrait and yearbook business.
The program will be led by Chris Wunder, Cr. Photog., the nation’s leading educator, platform speaker and author on School and Event Photography. His programs have been featured at every major convention including PPA, WPPI, PMA, PSPA, SPAC and many others. Chris offers this program only twice per year, and this is your chance! Here’s the course curriculum:
DAY 1 focuses on School Photography Sales and Marketing. You'll learn how to book schools, what they expect, what they avoid, the products and services you'll need to offer, and what it takes to beat the national competitors. Find out why many schools like higher prices and why offering more competitive prices might actually disqualify you from getting the business. Discover “secrets” of the trade that can work for you. Did you know that the FALL is the optimal time to start promoting your School Photography program for next year? You’ll leave this program “pumped” with enthusiasm and armed with the best practices of the business – just in time for your Fall sales campaign. The "fast track" tactics and strategies taught in this course have helped thousands of photographers enter and profit from this market. Don’t miss out! Day #1 runs from 8:30AM to 6PM.
DAYS 2, 3 & 4 focus on school portrait techniques, lighting, posing, crowd control, specialized software for image capture, editing, proofing and backup, equipment demos and high-speed digital workflow. Learn how to photograph 500 students in less than 3 hours while maintaining good quality, excellent customer service with highly-accurate student data and linked image management. This part of the program is a hands-on training experience. You are welcome to bring your own equipment for the simulated school photo model shoot, but it's not required. Software & Equipment Vendors will be on hand to demonstrate their equipment during the model shoot. See it work in actual use and compare features before you buy. Day #4’s program starts with a critique of the student images photographed at the live model session. We’ll help you fine-tune your techniques to achieve near-studio portrait quality in your School Photos. This part of the program will take the fear out of handling high-volume workflow. Course schedule for Days 2, 3 & 4. runs from 8:30AM to 8:30PM.
Day 5 (Final Day - until 3PM) focuses on an important and integral part of any successful School Photography program – Yearbooks and Memory Books. Schools like the convenience of dealing with one company for both their yearbook and portrait needs, and you'll appreciate the additional revenues you can earn. Learn how to handle yearbook staff and advisor relations, sales and marketing for yearbooks and layout techniques. Get tips on how to price, sell and service school yearbook accounts for Elementary, Middle and Jr. High Schools and smaller Private Schools and Academies. Basics of digital layout using Marathon's FREE software will also be reviewed. Find out how to use Yearbooks to get in the “back door” in competitor accounts which can result in you getting the whole account – Underclass photos and Yearbooks. Course runs from 8:30AM to 3PM.

Create your own “economic stimulus” by providing a profitable and much-needed photographic service where there’s little competition. You can become the local provider of choice for Portrait Directory services for Churches, Country Clubs and Homeowner’s Associations in your local and regional area.
As most of the work is done on location, there’s no retail studio required; making it the perfect opportunity for the home or location-based photographer. Best of all, Directory programs can be photographed anytime during the year; making it the perfect year-round promotion to fill-in the gaps in your marketing plan.
This comprehensive one day program will teach you everything you need to get started! Get an “insiders” view of the multi-million dollar directory industry – what clients expect, how to negotiate the best deal, and how to beat the “national” competitors. Learn how to schedule the portraiture appointments on weekday evenings – not weekends, so there’s little conflict with your other appointments and events you have to photograph.
You’ll learn how to get Clients to book with you, how to conduct a profitable promotion, get tips on selling your portraiture and publishing your Directories the easy way using automated layout software. Learn the “secrets” of portraiture mass-marketing and use it to help build your business, year-round thru “data mining” of these new clients – bringing them back to you over and over.
The Workshop will also cover equipment and software needs as well as high-volume workflow options allowing you to spend less time behind the computer preparing work for the lab, and more time with your Family. We’ll also share some great resources to make your life easier and more productive.
Still not convinced? Consider that many of your area Clients for these services turn to out-of-town companies to provide Pictorial Directories. This can divert family portraiture revenues away from you, the local photographer. Don’t let it happen! Reclaim your share of this lucrative (but much understood) market. Attending this program is the important first step. This is one workshop you can’t afford to miss.
